A research team led by Cornell University’s Creative Machines Lab has created a computer algorithm that can be used to witness virtual creatures evolving their squishy, muscle-like features in order to teach themselves to walk.

The team incorporated concepts from developmental biology and how nature builds complex animals – from jellyfish to jaguars. The result is an array of bizarre, simulated robots that evolve a diverse series of gaits and gallops. For more information regarding this study, contact Syl Kacapyr at the Media Relations Office.

Makers of 'Splat' to attend startup summer camp

A student-developed device that plugs into a smartphone to transform it into a video game console has caught the attention of a global venture capital firm, which has offered the students the chance to take their technology to the next level.

The device, called Splat, is the product of a tech company called Spontaneous Tech Inc. started in 2011 by a group of Cornell students, including CEO Ricky Panzer ’13. This summer, Panzer and six other team members will spend several weeks at Highland Capital Partners’ Silicon Valley office to grow their company, with the help of an $18,000 stipend from Highland, free work space and an investor mentor. Jane Mendle is an assistant professor of human development and a former professor of psychology comments on the groundbreaking life and career of Dr. Joyce Brothers ‘47 who died on Monday:

“Dr. Joyce Brothers was the first to talk frankly and accurately about psychological and sexual issues in mainstream media outlets. She had a remarkable impact in the field of mental health, both because she destigmatized previously taboo topics and because her radio program and magazine columns allowed her to reach people who might otherwise not have thought or been able to access a psychologist.

“She talked openly and naturally about virtually every topic, and many of the issues she raised still hold resonance today, including sexual satisfaction, body image, grief, depression, gender bias, work-life balance and whether it is realistic for a woman to ‘have it all.’”
